Extruding process is
second step in powder coating production.
Extruding
efficiency is one of important parameter in powder coating
properties such as gloss, leveling and mechanical properties. One of
most popular extruder use in powder coating industry is co- rotating
twin screw extruder. Special characteristics of this type extruder
makes it suitable for compounding of thermoplastic and thermo set
materials such as powder coating. for the powder coating as a thermo
set material , this extruder need to be modified in operation
performance therefore the co rotation twin screw extruders use in
powder coating are a little different with the extruders for
thermoplastic compounding. The main difference is open able barrel
for easy access to the screw and barrel inside for cleaning in case
of material setting in barrel.
Four general characteristics of a co-rotation twin screw extruder
suitable for powder coating industry are:
A) Self cleaning
The co-rotation motion
of the screws offer self cleaning performance which is very
important for color changing in powder coating production.
B) Open able barrel
As a thermo set
material , there is a risk of material heat setting during powder
coating production. Therefore the barrel in powder coating extruder
must be open able for easy cleaning for color change as well as
gelled material removing.
C) Cooling system
Control of material temperature during of extruding is an
important
parameter in powder coating production.
To prohibit overheating and heat curing of material as result,
extruder use in powder coating industry should be equipped with a
high efficiency cooling and heating system as well as a perfect
temperature control system.
D) screw configuration
Different kind of powder coating need different value of shearing
tension and dispersion value . some special powder need a powerful
shearing , mixing and dispersion whereas in some powder coating
formulation these actins should be less than others.
For this reason the
screw elements in powder coating extruder must be removable and easy
to change the configuration specially for kneading elements.

E) Possibility of fine
powder feeding in to the extruder
A big problem for powder coating manufacturer around the world is re
extruding of fine powder collected from bag filter or wrong
formulated powder coating as till now feeding of fine powder in to
the extruders was not possible .for wrong formulated powder coating,
manufacturer have to add little by little to next batch of pre mixed
material or send out this powders as waste powder.
Thanks to the JINLI R&D team for new and unique development in twin
screw extruder TSX-N series with ability of fine powder feeding .now
our customers who use TSX-N series extruder can recycle powder
coating with 50 - 70% of nominal capacity of extruder.
F) Minimum Clearance between two screw and screw –barrel
In a co- rotating twin screw extruder , clearance between pairs of
screw and between screw and barrel is a main parameter to obtain
maximum dispersion and mixing properties as well as maximum self
cleaning. In our TSX-N series extruder this clearance is
approximately ZERO .even in rotation, this clearance is less than
0.1 mm therefore,suing our TSX-N series extruders enable powder
coating manufacturer to decrease percentage of pigments and increase
percentage of fillers in formulation without any influence on gloss.
